Weekly Connection #12
Building community, scams, employee expectations, AI again...

Hello from Illinois, home of the Bears, spray paint, pinball machines, the first McDonald's restaurant, and my husband. Here’s what I’ve been reading lately:
💪🏼 Women in Music: Building a Strong Music Community for Gender Equality. An article by me for the team at Byta, about the elements you need to build a community. And it’s not just about music — early feedback from a friend; “I feel a sense of pride that my [female] football community hits the four criteria.”
💸 You’ve Got (Scam) Mail (NYT gift link). Is everyone being swindled all the time and just not talking about it?
💀 Have you ever thought about the digital version of Swedish death cleaning? With the number of dead users on Facebook predicted to outnumber the living by 2070, tech platforms haven’t been designed to think about death.
🧲 Magnetic’s take on how to meet evolving employee expectations. One part that stuck out to me: “Even for a person who stays in their role for the next five years, the skills required are predicted to change by as much as 50%,” — how can employers keep this person in work and engaged?
🔥 Similarly, it is reported that many employees fear how AI will impact their jobs in the coming years. I find that learning more about the subject is the best way to conquer anxieties. With this in mind, here’s a layperson’s guide to how AI large language models work.
📚 What I’m reading on Substack this week: Make Work Better:
P.S. I’m not sure about you, but I’ve been feeling down from all the doom and gloom recently. Here’s a palate cleanser for everyone’s wellbeing: the first baby beaver in 400 years has been born in London.
